Paul Boron may have only wanted to have an unbiased record of his disciplinary meeting with Principal David Conrad. When he told the principal he was recording, Conrad allegedly gave Boron unsolicited legal advice, calling the act a felony. Illinois law seems fuzzy on that point. Conrad did not seem to have a reasonable expectation of privacy because the conversation took place by an open door to the hallway. This also appears to be an equal protection issue, since students are routinely recorded by cameras without their permission.
