In Europe, where GMO labeling is better established, Monsanto advertises its devotion to providing this information to better inform the consumer. In the US, it’s a different story where the corporation is spending millions to keep consumers from learning what they’re putting in their mouths. It reminds me of something J.R. did in the original run of “Dallas.” When the government forced him to come clean on some dirty secrets, he made it sound like it was his idea at a press conference.
Vermont has just become the first state to pass a stand-alone bill requiring the labeling of GMO products. Several other nearby states have also passed or are considering GMO labeling laws, but these measures would only become effective if a certain minimum number of states do likewise. Governor Peter Shumlin has promised to sign the Vermont bill, which would go into effect on July 1, 2016. The bio-tech industry is expected to sue.
