The Department of Defense bought the 16 planes in 2008. They were decommissioned last year after the discovery of performance and maintenance issues. One of these issues is the difficulty of finding replacement parts in Afghanistan. If the military were a corporation, it could have lowered its tax obligation with such a large capital loss. However, since its part of the government, we all take the loss.
